専門は[[比較政治学]]であり、[[政治システム]]に対する[[変数 (数学)|変数]]として存在する[[政治文化]]研究の先駆け。[[ガブリエル・アーモンド]]（Gabriel Abraham Almond）との共著『現代市民の政治文化』において、臣民型・参加型・未文化型という有名な類型を提示した。

[[1994年]]から[[1995年]]まで[[アメリカ政治学会]]会長を務めた。[[2002年]]、[[ヨハン・スクデ政治学賞]]を受賞。
