[[ミシガン大学]]大学院を修了し、1965年に博士号取得。[[オハイオ大学]]（1965-1968）、[[マサチューセッツ大学]]（1968-1985）を経て、1985年から現職。学術誌''Political Theory''編集長（1984-1990）。

[[フリードリヒ・ニーチェ]]や[[ミシェル・フーコー]]の思想を補助線として、これまで自明視されてきた「権力」「民主主義」といった政治学の概念を批判的に考察する作業を進める。
